FS2037 Early Heart Shaped Tavern Clay Pipe Holder $175.
This is so interesting. The man I bought this from was very knowledgable and told me a little about this. Pipe holders were often hung on walls in taverns in the 19th century. They held clay pipes with long handles, which were filled with tobacco, lit with a match kept in the match holder. this one is attached to the front of this pipe holder. It is hand carved. When they were finished smoking, the pipe was emptied, and the end of the pipe was cut off and it was replaced in the pipe holder for the next smoker. Of course this one is particularly appealing because of the charming heart shape. Old gray green paint. Signs of original green paint underneath. New clay pipe is included. Measures 9-3/4 inches wide and 11 inches tall. $175. Includes shipping.
